Light Timers and Automatic Lights
Keeping your property well lit one of the first lines of defense when it comes to protecting your home.
Burglars and trespassers will usually be deterred if they see a home that’s adequately lit (both inside and out). Automatic lights activated by motion sensors or lights with digital light timers can catch a would-be intruder by surprise.
Light timers can also be used on indoor lights, usually lamps, as well as electronics such as radios and televisions. You can purchase these devices online, at hardware stores and from big box retailers. Alarm system providers may include some form of digital light timers or light switch timers as part of the security equipment in your monitoring package, depending on the company you sign up with.
How light timers work
Automatic lights provide an easy way to ensure your home is well lit without much effort on your part. These types of lights, when used for security lighting purposes, generally turn on when they sense motion. However, automatic lights and light timers can be programmed to turn lights on or off based on:
- Time of day
- Sunrise and sunset
- Occupancy – Some lighting control devices can detect if a room is occupied using infrared or ultrasonic technology.
Devices used with light timers
Other devices can be synched up with indoor and outdoor lights to make controlling your home’s lighting more convenient. Wireless technology is a big component with digital light timers and can mimic the action of a light switch. Timers offer a convenient way to automate and manage lighting but if you want to have more control and access to security lighting around your home, consider adding one of the following devices to your automatic lights.
Home automation systems typically include lighting control features that perform the same functions as light timers for easier energy and security management.
Whether you’re out of town for a week or just returning home from a late night at work, light timers and other control features provide a good way to increase security at your home and help you control your energy usage.
