Don’t Let a Burglar Unwrap Your Holiday
Shopping trips, parties and family events have people spending more time away from home. Piles of gifts under Christmas trees grow taller every day. Stockings filled with goodies hang within easy reach.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – not just to you but to burglars.
Statistically, the winter months see fewer total burglaries than summertime. Still, no homeowner should use statistics as an excuse to let his or her guard down. When you see your local news affiliates roll out stories about real-life Grinches, it becomes obvious that crime doesn’t take time off for the holidays.
Take these steps to prevent a burglar from turning the season of giving into a season of taking:
- Keep your home security system armed. If you have an interactive alarm system with remote access, use it to keep tabs on the homestead while you’re away.
- Don’t use social media to post photos of gifts, mention the gifts you’re getting or announce holiday travel plans. Burglars have been known to scour these sites looking for friends of friends who carelessly share information that could compromise the security of their homes.
- After you shop, be careful about disposing of the boxes that the gifts came in. A potential intruder cruising through your neighborhood looking for targets will see the empty game console box poking out of your recycling bin as an indicator of loot waiting inside the house.
